Ben Carson is an American neurosurgeon, author, philanthropist, and 2016 Republican presidential candidate. He is famous for separating conjoined twins. Carson was born on September 18, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan, to Sonia and Robert Carson. He has an older brother named “Curtis”. Carson’s parents divorced when he was still young. He was raised by his mother, who took care of several jobs in order to make ends meet. Carson attended Southwest High School, and his academic strength won him a full scholarship from Yale University. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in psychology. In 1977, he went on to receive a doctorate in medicine from the University of Michigan.

Carson became an intern at Johns Hopkins University in 1977. He became the chief resident of neurosurgery in 1982. In 1983, Carson accepted a position at the Sir Charles Geldner Hospital in Perth, Australia. A year later, he returned to Johns Hopkins University and became director of pediatric neurosurgery in 1985. In 1987, Carson and his team successfully separated a pair of 7-month-old occipital twins in Germany. Since then, he has performed several such operations in his career. Carson was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 2006. In 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.
Carson published his autobiography “Hands of Genius” in 1990 and became a writer for the first time. He was played by the actor “Little Cuba Gooding” in the 2009 TV series “Hands of Genius: The Story of Ben Carson”. Other famous books include Thinking Big, Big Picture, Taking Risks and One Country. Carson announced on May 4, 2015 that he would run for the Republican presidential nomination. After the Super Tuesday primaries in March 2016, he withdrew from the competition. He later supported Donald Trump’s candidacy. He was nominated as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development of the Trump Administration.
