She is the founder of The Corcoran Group, Barbara Corcoran Inc. and Barbara Corcoran Venture Partners. She is the “Shark Investor” on the ABC reality show Shark Tank. Barbara Ann Corcoran was born on March 10, 1949 in Edgewater, New Jersey. She has 9 siblings, including a brother named John. Corcoran attended St. Thomas Aquinas College in Rockland County, New York. She graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Education.

After college, Corcoran worked as a teacher for a year. She tried several other jobs, including a waitress. Corcoran co-founded the real estate business “The Corcoran Group” in 1973. She reportedly started the company with a $1,000 loan from then-boyfriend Ramone Simone. The company thrived for the next 25 years. It was sold to NRT Incorporated in 2001 for $66 million. Corcoran is also the founder of Barbara Corcoran Inc. and Barbara Corcoran Venture Partners. She is a columnist for publications, Red Book, More Magazine, Daily Review, and the New York Daily News. She’s written numerous books, including If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Tie Ribbons on Your Braids (2003), Nextville (2008), and Shark Tale: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business (2011).
Corcoran is the “shark investor” in the reality show “Shark Tank.” Since the show started, she has invested in more than 20 businesses. Created by Mark Burnett, the series stars Kevin O’Leary, Diamond John, Lori Greiner, Mark Cuban and Robert Herhavick. It premiered on ABC on August 9, 2009. As of March 2017, 8 seasons were completed. Corcoran is a real estate writer for NBC’s Today Show. She has appeared on TV shows such as The Nate Berkus Show, Weekend Tonight, The View, Beyond The Tank, Rachael Ray and Good Morning America.
