Barbara Bush is the wife of former US President George H.W. Bush, the mother of George W. Bush, and the founder of the Barbara Bush Family Literacy Foundation. She served as the First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. Bush was born on June 8, 1925 in Queens, New York, his original name was Barbara Pierce. Her parents are Pauline and Marvin Pierce. She has three siblings, Martha, James and Scott. Pierce grew up in Rye, Westchester County, New York. She attended Rye Country Day School and then at Ashley Hall Boarding School in Charleston, South Carolina. She briefly attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Bush was hospitalized in November 2008 and underwent small bowel surgery. She underwent aortic valve replacement in 2009. Her recent illnesses include pneumonia, congestive heart failure, Graves’ disease and depression. In April 2018, she chose “comfort care” instead of seeking any further treatment.
