Azealia Amanda Banks is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. She was born on May 31, 1991 in Manhattan, New York. Banks’ father died of pancreatic cancer when she was a toddler. She was raised by her mother in Harlem. Banks attended Catholic School, followed by LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. She also took dance classes at the National Academy of Dance.

Banksy started his career performing in various off-Broadway musicals at Tada! Youth Theater. Her stage credits include Rabbit Sense, Sleepover and Heroes. She then starred in the stage production of the musical comedy City of Angels. After failing auditions for TBS and Nickelodeon, she ventured into music.

In 2008, Banks adopted the stage name “Miss Bank$”. Her early records include “Give Me a Chance” and “Seventeen”. She signed with XL Recordings, but their business relationship was short-lived. Banks released her debut single “212” on December 6, 2011. The song was certified Gold in the UK and has sold over 250,000 copies in the US. Banks signed recording deals with Interscope and Polydor Records in 2012. Her debut EP ‘1991’ was released on May 28, 2012 and reached number one on the Top Heatseekers Albums Chart. Two months later, her free debut mixtape “Fantasea” was released to critical acclaim. She collaborated with recording artists Lady Gaga and Kanye West on several tracks that never worked out.

Banks signed a recording deal with Prospect Records in 2014. Her debut studio album, Broke with Expensive Taste, was released on November 7, 2014 later that year. The album peaked at number 30 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Yung Rapunxel”, “Heavy Metal & Reflections”, “Chasing Time”. Banks is reportedly working on her second album, “Business & Pleasure.” Her second mixtape, “Slay-Z”, was released on March 24, 2016, with the title track “The Big Big Beat”. Banksy poses nude for Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine in February 2015. She is scheduled to make her feature film debut in the 2016 RZA-directed musical film Coco.
