Aubrey Kerr McClendon is an American businessman, founder of American Energy Partners, and former CEO of Chesapeake Energy. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 14, 1959, to his parents Joe and Carol McLendon. He grew up near Belle Isle and attended Heritage Hall Middle School and High School. McClendon received a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke University in 1981. He briefly worked as an accountant, and later as a ground staff at Jaytex Oil and Gas Company.

McClendon and Tom L. Ward co-founded the oil and gas company Chesapeake Energy Corporation in 1989. The company is headquartered in Oklahoma City and is known for using unconventional drilling techniques. The company went public in 1993 and has since employed thousands of employees. McLendon resigned as CEO of Chesapeake in 2013. In the same year, he founded the private company American Energy Partners. He is also part of the owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team.
