The show often depicts the family’s various challenges to nature, weather and animals. The family is also popular because they are relatives of singer Jewel, who has appeared in many episodes of the show. Since their marriage, they have had two children together, but they rarely appear on TV; Jane emphasizes keeping them as far away from the camera as possible and from the scrutiny of the many critics online. In 2014, Atz Lee and Jane were involved in the filming of a TV show that involved the use of helicopters to hunt bears, however, it is illegal in Alaska to use any form of aircraft to find prey. The couple and production company pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were put on hold as Atz Lee was recovering from a serious hiking accident, but the charges were quickly dropped — instead, production company Wilma TV was fined a total of $17,500.
