Ashley Judd is an American actress and political activist. She is known for films such as Kiss the Girl (1997), Double Jeopardy (1999) and Divergent (2014). Her TV shows “Sisters” and “Missing”. Judd was born Ashley Tyler Ciminella on April 19, 1968 in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Naomi Judd, is a country singer, and her father, Michael Charles Ciminella, is a marketing consultant. They divorced in 1972. She has an older sister named Wynonna. Judd attended Franklin High School in Tennessee. She completed her BA in French at the University of Kentucky in 2007. She received her MPA degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2010.

In 1990, Judd moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. She attended the prestigious Playhouse West School. She made her small screen debut in 1991 in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She repeatedly played the role of “Reed Halsey” on the NBC drama “Sisters” (1991-94). Judd shot to fame as “Ruby Lee Gissing” in the independent film Ruby in Paradise (1993). She then had a supporting role in Heat (1995) starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. Other early films include Smoke (1995) with Harvey Keitel and Killing Hour (1996) with Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L Jackson. She played “Norma Jean” in the HBO TV movie Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996).
Judd as “The Doctor.” Kate McTiernan’ opposite Morgan Freeman in the thriller Kiss the Girl (1997). The Gary Fried-directed film grossed $60 million. Her next big role was a crime thriller Elizabeth “Libby” Parsons in the film Double Dangerous (1999). The film was directed by Bruce Beresford and starred Tommy Lee Jones. Judd’s other films include People Like You ( 2001), The Sacred Secret of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002), Bug (2006), Dolphin Tale (2011) and Insurgent (2015). She made her debut in 2003’s revival of Cats on a Hot Tin Roof in Tennessee Williams Broadway. She played “Becca Winstone” in the short-lived series Missing (2012). The role earned her a Primetime Emmy for her performance in the miniseries. Her TV credits include Twin Peaks and Berlin Station .
In addition to acting, Judd is also a political activist and humanitarian. She has served as a global ambassador for YouthAIDS, UNFPA, Population Services International, and the Polaris Project. She joined the International Center for Women’s Studies Leadership Council in 2011. She is also known for her work with Women for Women International, Equality Now, Apne Aap Worldwide and Demand Abolition. Judd’s memoir, Bitter and Sweet, was published in April 2011. It is a New York Times bestseller.
