He won the 1968 US Open, the 1970 Australian Open and the 1975 Wimbledon. As a doubles player, he also won the 1971 French Open and the 1977 Australian Open and reached the final at Wimbledon in 1971 and the US Open in 1968. Ash also won four Davis Cups. Ash is believed to have contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during heart bypass surgery. He founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for Fighting AIDS and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton in 1993. Arthur Ashe died of AIDS-related pneumonia on February 6, 1993, at the age of 49.
