Norichika Aoki was born on January 1982 in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Aoki is a right fielder who hits with his left and throws with his right. Aoki was a pitcher in middle and high school, but transitioned to the outfield during his time at Waseda University.
In 2003, he was selected by the Yakult Swallows in the fourth round of the Japan Professional Baseball League. During his time with the Yakult Swallows, Aoki was a seven-time NPB All-Star from 2005 to 2011. He also won the Best Nine from 2005 to 2011 and the Golden Glove award six times from 2006 to 2011. Aoki is a three-time CL batting champion in 2005, 2007 and 2010. He was named CL Rookie of the Year in 2005 and became the CL stolen base leader in 2006. Aoki also won the NPB All-Star Game MVP twice in 2006 and 2009. He represented Japan in gold medals at the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics and was named to the All-NBA team in 2009. In 2012, the Milwaukee Brewers signed Aoki to a two-year contract. In December 2013, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. He is one of four players in Japanese professional baseball to hit 200 or more in a single season. Aoki also represented Japan at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
