Antonio Banderas is a Spanish film actor, director and producer. He is best known for his roles in several films of Pedro Almodovar. His screen works include Desperado (1995), The Mask of Zorro (1998), Spy Kids (2001) and Puss in Boots (2011). Banderas was originally named Jose Antonio Dominguez Bandera and was born on August 10, 1960 in Malaga, Spain. His mother Anna is a teacher, and his father Jose is a policeman. He has a younger brother named Francisco. Banderas studied at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Malaga. He originally wanted to be a football player, but his dream ended because of a leg injury.

Banderas moved to Madrid in the late 1970s to pursue acting. He joined the Spanish National Theater and promptly attracted the attention of film producer Pedro Almodovar. His film debut is a quirky comedy, Labyrinth of Passion (1982). Banderas played the gay “Antonio Benitez” (Antonio Benitez) in The Law of Desire (1987). Banderas played an unrecognized role in the documentary “Madonna: Truth or Dare” (1991). The following year, he co-starred with the struggling musician “Nestor Castillo” (Nestor Castillo) in the feature film “Mambo” (1992). Banderas played an important role in Philadelphia (1993) and Vampire Interview (1994). He played “Mariachi” in Robert Rodriguez’s Desperadoes (1995). He played the protagonist of “Alejandro Murrieta aka Zorro” in Zorro’s Mask (1998). The movie also starred Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones. The role of Zorro earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best actor.
Banderas plays Gregorio “Greg” Cortez in a trilogy of spy children’s films. His most recent films include Machete Kills (2013) with Danny Trejo, The Expendables 3 (2014) with Sylvester Stallone, and Rodrigo · 33 (2015) in collaboration with Rodrigo Santoro. He voiced the character “Cat in Boots” in the Shrek film series. He also voiced the SpongeBob movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015).
