Early life and career
Anni-Frid Lyngstad was born in Bjørkåsen, Balangen, Norway in 1945 to a Norwegian mother, Synni, and a German father, Alfred. When she was one year old, Lyngstad and her grandmother left her home in Norway to settle in Sweden’s Härjedalen region. They were eventually joined by Synni and subsequently moved to Malmkoping. When Sinney died shortly after kidney failure, Ringstad was raised by her grandmother. In 1949, the two moved to Torshälla, where Lyngstad’s grandmother worked as a tailor.
Lingstad showed musical talent from an early age, and she often sang in front of her school classes. She soon became known locally for her vocal skills. At the age of 13, she got her first job as a dance band singer with the Evald Ek Orchestra. Linstad also began taking singing lessons with opera tenor Fokker Anderson. Later, she collaborated with a jazz band that included such artists as Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. In 1963, Lyngstad became the lead singer of the Gunnar Sandevarn Trio and formed his own band, Anni-Frid Four.
Breakthrough as a solo artist
In 1967, Lyngstad won the Swedish national talent competition “New Faces”. She won first prize, signed a recording contract with the Swedish subsidiary of EMI Records, and appeared on the popular Swedish show “Hylands Hörna”. Lyngstad was an instant hit, causing many producers and labels to contact her. Soon after, she recorded her first single “En ledig dag” for EMI Sweden. Lyngstad continued to tour Sweden in 1968 while recording several songs for EMI. At this point, she left her family and moved to Stockholm.
In 1971, Lyngstad released her debut album “Frida”. In the same year, she released the single “Min egen stad”, which reached number one in Svensktoppen; all four future members of ABBA appeared on the song as backup singers. Under Frida’s name, she performed in cabaret shows and often on television and radio. After five years at EMI Sweden, Lyngstad switched to Polar Music and released the single “Man vill ju leva lite dessemellan”, her second single on the Swedish charts.

In 1972, Lyngstad, her boyfriend Benny Andersson, her friend Björn Ulvaeus and Ulvaeus’ wife Agnetha Fältskog formed the pop group ABBA. international solo career
After ABBA disbanded in 1982, Lyngstad continued to pursue her solo career. Later, in 1986, Lingstad moved to Switzerland to live with her royal boyfriend, Prince Heinrich Ruzzo de Royce, Count of Plauen. The pair married in 1992, giving the titles Princess Linstad Royce and Countess of Plown. Seven years later, following Ruzzo’s death, Rinstad became the Queen Mother and Countess.
Since 2008, Lingstad has lived in Zermatt, Switzerland, with her British boyfriend, Henry Smith V, Viscount Hambleden.
