Ann Bradford Davis was born on May 3, 1926 in Schenectady, New York. Ann grew up with identical twins and two other siblings and moved with her family to Erie, Pennsylvania when she was three. After high school, she attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Initially, she pursued a future career in medicine, majoring in pre-med.
However, she eventually fell in love with acting and devoted herself entirely to drama. Part of her changing career goals was inspired by her brother’s performance in the “Oklahoma” play. In 1948, Davis graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in drama and speech.
Profession
Davis’ first role was as a music judge on the show “Jukebox Jury” in the early 1950s. She then landed a role on “The Bob Cummings Show.” Ann played Charmaine “Schultz” Schultz on the series, a role recommended by her friend’s boyfriend, who is a casting director. It proved to be a major step forward in Davis’ career, and she was nominated for four Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Of the four nominations, she won twice.
Over the next few years, Ann appeared on shows like “The Ford Show, Starring Ernie Ford of Tennessee” before earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During this time, she explored other performance opportunities, appearing in many stage productions. These include “The Matchmaker,” which toured across the country, and the Broadway musical “Once Upon a Time on a Mattress.” In the mid-’60s, Ann returned to television and played a gym teacher on the sitcom “The John Forsyth Show,” which was canceled after one season.

In the ’60s and ’70s, Ann B. Davis supplemented her acting income with a number of brand endorsements. She’s probably most closely associated with Ford Motor Company, as she’s appeared in many of the automaker’s television companies. Her most famous ad was for the mid-size Ford Fairlane model.
Additionally, Ann appeared in commercials for Minute Rice, a brand endorsement that lasted until 1980. However, these TV commercials are broadcast almost exclusively in Canada. Later in her career, Ann appeared in several commercials for brands including Shake ‘n Bake and Swiffer. Her iconic role as a maid made her ideal for these ads, as marketing executives saw her as a recognisable figure for a housewife.
