Mary Angelica’s mother was an American Franciscan nun and founder of Eternal Text Television. She was born Rita Antoinette Rizzo on April 20, 1923, in Canton, Ohio. Her parents, John and Mae Helen Rizzo, divorced in 1929. She was raised by her mother “Mae” who worked several jobs to provide food and other necessities. May struggled with chronic depression and poverty. She later got a job at a dry cleaner. Angelica attended McKinley High School in Canton. She graduated in 1941 and worked briefly for the Timken Roller Bearing Company.

Profession
At the age of 21, Angelica was accepted as an impostor by poor Claire who was forever adored. On August 15, 1944, she was known as “Sister Rita” at St. Paul’s Shrine in Cleveland. She was admitted as a nun as a novice in 1945 and received the new title “Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation”. In 1966 she established the Basilica of the Holy Eucharist and the Convent of Our Lady of Angels.

Angelica founded the Eternal Text Television Network (EWTN) in 1980. The network aired their first Catholic show on August 15, 1981. Angelica hosted her own talk show “Mama Angelica Live” from 1981 to 2001. Since then, EWTN has broadcast to more than 250 million households worldwide. Angelica was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.

Mama Angelica passed away on March 27, 2016 (Easter Sunday). She is 92 years old. Her reported cause of death was stroke complications. She suffered a stroke in 2001 and was required to wear an eye patch because her eyelids couldn’t close.
