Angela Merkel is a German politician and leader of the Christian Democratic Union. She is the current German chancellor, the first woman to hold the position. Merkel was born Angela Dorothea Kasner on July 17, 1954 in Hamburg, Germany. Her father, Horst, was a Lutheran minister, and her mother, Herlinde, was an English teacher. She has two siblings, Marcus and Erin. She grew up in a small town called Templin, north of Berlin. Merkel received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Leipzig in 1978. She received her PhD in Quantum Chemistry from the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin in 1986.

Before entering politics, Merkel worked as a research scientist at the German Academy of Sciences (1978-90). She joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1989. She became a member of the German Bundestag in January 1991. Merkel was Minister of Women and Youth (1991-1994) and Environment Minister (1994-1998). She was elected as general secretary of the CDU in 1998. She held that office from November 1998 through April 2000.
Merkel was appointed leader of the CDU in April 2000. She was the first woman to lead the CDU. In 2005, she made history again as Germany’s first female chancellor. She was sworn in on November 22, 2005. She was re-elected in 2009 and 2013. During her tenure, she met with world leaders such as George W. Bush, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. In 2011, Merkel was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. In 2015, she was named Person of the Year by Time magazine.
