Andrew Thomas McCarthy was born on November 29, 1962 in Westfield, New Jersey. He grew up with three brothers and eventually moved to Bernardsville, New Jersey as a teenager to attend high school and preparatory college. It was at this prep academy that he first played the role of the sly Dodgers in the school production “Oliver!” After graduation, McCarthy attended New York University, but was expelled two years later.

Andrew’s acting career began in the 1983 comedy film “The Class” with Jacqueline Bisset. He then teamed up with some other actors from the ’80s, collectively known as the “Brat Pack”. McCarthy has starred in films such as “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Pink Lady” with many of these actors. In 1985, he starred in the movie “Heaven Helps Us” with Donald Sutherland and Matt Dillon. In 1987, he had roles in films such as The Mannequin and Less Than Zero. Throughout the late ’80s, Andrew went on to star in films such as New Horse, Bernie’s Weekend, and Kansas. During this time, he also made his Broadway debut with The Winter Boys.
