Andrea Mitchell was born on October 30, 1946 in New Rochelle, New York. She grew up in a Jewish family, mother Cecil, Sydney father, and siblings Susan and Arthur. Cecil has worked as an administrator at the New York Institute of Technology, while Sydney is CEO and part owner of a Manhattan furniture manufacturing company and president of Beth Synagogue in New Rochelle. Andrea attended New Rochelle High School and after graduation attended the University of Pennsylvania. As a college student, she was the news director for the student radio station WXPN. In 1967, Andrea received a BA in English Literature.

After college, Mitchell worked as a reporter for Philadelphia’s KYW Radio as a town hall correspondent. She also reports for KYW Radio’s sister station KYW-TV. In 1976, she was hired by WTOP in Washington, D.C., an affiliate of CBS, and two years later she began working as chief correspondent for NBC Network News. In 1979, Andrea became an energy reporter for NBC News, covering the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. She began covering the White House in 1981 and was NBC News’ chief White House correspondent from 1993 to 1994. Mitchell was NBC’s chief congressional correspondent from 1988 to 1992 and chief foreign affairs correspondent in 1994.

In September 2011, Mitchell revealed that she had breast cancer, stating, “My breast cancer was discovered during an annual screening not long ago.
