Ally McCoist was born in Belshire, Scotland in September 1962. A striker, he started his career at St Johnstone from 1979 to 1981, scoring 22 goals in 57 appearances.
He then played for Sunderland from 1981 to 1983 before joining Rangers from 1983 to 1998, scoring 251 goals in 418 appearances. McCoist ended his career at Kilmarnock from 1998 to 2001. He became Rangers’ record goalscorer and set records for league goals, Scottish League Cup goals and the most goals scored by a player in European competition. McCoist is the fifth-highest goalscorer in Scottish top-flight history. He has also represented Scotland at international level for the Under-19s, Under-21s and senior teams. McCoist was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and is a member of the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. He returned to Rangers as assistant manager in 2007 and became the new manager in 2011. In December 2014, McCoist submitted his resignation notice and Rangers said a 12-month notice period had begun.
