She was also responsible for nine top 30 hits and five top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart. Alison was born on June 18, 1961 in Billericay, Essex, England, to a French father and an English mother. She dropped out of school at 16 to work as a salesperson and train as a piano tuner. During the late 1970s and early 1980s she was involved in a number of punk rock, pub rock and blues bands in the South East Essex region. Bands like the Vandals, Screamin’Ab Dabs, Vicars and the Little Roosters (the latter starring former Cock Sparer’s Gary Lammin). In 1982, at the age of 21, Moyet formed the electro-pop duo Yazoo, which was the beginning of her mainstream pop career. Moyet released her debut solo album Alf (named after her punk-era nickname) in 1984. Alison made her stage debut in the 2001 West End production of the musical Chicago. She played the role of “Mom” Morton, which was originally planned as a short film, which was later extended to six months. After the show, she starred in the play Smaller, which went on a regional tour ahead of its performance at the Lyric Theatre in London.
