Alicia Machado is a Venezuelan-born actress, TV presenter, businesswoman and former Miss Universe. She was born on December 6, 1976 in Maracay, Venezuela, as Yoseph Alicia Machado Fajardo. Her father, Arturo, is from Cuba, and her mother, Martha, is Spanish. Machado became a U.S. citizen in May 2016. She was an activist and supporter of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Machado started her career as a model and musical theatre artist at a young age. She was crowned Miss Venezuela in 1995. Machado succeeded Chelsea Smith of the United States as Miss Universe 1996. She is the fourth Venezuelan woman to receive the title. The runner-up in the beauty pageant was Aruba’s Tyron Mansell and the third runner-up was Finland’s Lola Odusoga. Businessman Donald Trump bought and took ownership of the Miss Universe company in 1996. He criticized Machado for being overweight, calling her “an eating machine.” Trump’s other labels include “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Butler.”

In 1997, Machado made his television debut on the soap opera Samantha. Her performance won her the 1998 Midia Award for Best New Actress and the 1999 Premios ACE Award. Machado played “Diana Rodriguez” in the 2007 episode “Pantera.” She also has major roles in TV series, Hasta que el dinero nos separe and Una familia con suerte. Her film credits include I Love Miami (2005), The History of Juan Diego (2013) and Juan Mas Amado (2016). Machado is a participant in the shows La Granja (2005) and Mira Quien Baila (2012). She was a judge for “Nuestra Belleza Latina” in 2007 and a mentor and coach in 2014.

Machado’s self-titled debut studio album Alicia Machado was released in 2004. The album was nominated for a Grammy and a Billboard Award. Another album, Si se Acabara el Mundo, was released in 2010. Machado posed nude for Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine in 2006. She has also appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair.
