But he is probably best known as the owner of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers (formerly known as the San Diego Chargers). He was born Alexander Gus Spanos, a Greek immigrant, on September 28, 1923, in Stockton, California. He was eight years old when he started working in his parents’ bakery. He later dropped out of college to join the Army Air Force and served as a tail gunner during World War II. After the war, he spent time as an amateur golfer. In 1951, he started a restaurant company with an $800 loan. The business quickly flourished, and by 1955 he had made his first million dollars. Over time, he invested his income in real estate, eventually starting AG Spanos. Today, his company is one of the largest apartment developers in the country. In 1984, he bought a 60% stake in the Chargers for $48 million. Over the next ten years, he became the full owner. Today, his son Dean oversees the team and serves as chairman and president. In 2013, Alexander Spanos celebrated 65 years of marriage to his wife Faye, with whom they have four children. Alex Spanos passed away on October 9, 2018 at the age of 95.
