After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in law from Moscow State University, Mamut began working as an adviser to the former Russian Yeltsin government and became a close friend of Yeltsin’s daughter, Tatyana Diachenko. Known as “the Yeltsin banker,” he gained notoriety in the New York bank money-laundering scandal in the late 1990s. However, he was never charged with anything other than in connection with the case. Alexander Mamut started accumulating wealth as one of the founders of the Imperial Bank. He then ran MDM-Bank for a time and was a major investor in Troika-Dialog investment bank and Ingosstrakh insurance company. Outside Russia, he is known for investing in Live Journal through his co-owned media company SUP Fabrik. Today, Mamut’s has an expanded business portfolio including real estate, retail, telecommunications, construction and oilfields.
