Alex Honnold is an American professional rock climber from Sacramento, California. His free solo climbing and big wall climbing have won worldwide recognition. Some of his climbs do not involve ropes or protective equipment. In June 2017, Honnold became the first person ever to complete an El Capitan free climb in Yosemite National Park. His journey is recorded in the movie Free Solo (2018). Honnold’s honors include Piolets d’Or (Golden Ice Axe) in 2018 for his outstanding contributions to rock climbing. His memoir “Lonely on the Wall” co-authored with David Roberts was published in 2017.
Honnold was born on August 17, 1985 in Deirdre and Charles Honnold in Sacramento, California. He has an older sister named Stacia. Both his parents are educators. Charles died of a heart attack in July 2004. Honnold attended Mira Loma High School. He graduated in 2003 as a member of the international bachelor’s degree program. He enrolled in an engineering program at the University of California, Berkeley, but dropped out after his freshman year.

Honnold started rock climbing at a local climbing gym. Although he struggled at first, his love for the sport kept him going. He cited Tommy Caldwell and Peter Croft as inspiration. Honnold participated in various national and international youth championships as a teenager. During his tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, he practiced climbing skills in the adjacent Indian Rock Park. In 2007, he gained recognition after freely playing Astroman and Rostrum in Yosemite for one day. The following year, he flew solo on the Moonlight Buttress route in Zion National Park, Utah.
In 2008, Honnold played a free solo on the regular northwest wall (2,000 feet) of Half Dome. His climb was recorded in the movie “First Climb: Alone on the Wall” (2010). This also allowed him to accept a 60-minute interview with CBS. In June 2012, Honnold and his climbing partner Hans Florine set a new record on the Nose route in El Capitan in Yosemite (2:23:46). Honnold appeared in the documentaries Reel Rock 7 (2012), Valley Uprising (2014) and Reel Rock 10 (2015). He appeared in multiple episodes of the Ultimate Rush series (2014-15) and Reel Rock Film Tour (2010-18).
On June 3, 2017, Honnold made history as the first and only person to achieve El Capitan free climbing. He successfully completed the Freerider route (2,900 feet) in 3 hours and 56 minutes. Honnold’s impressive feat led to the documentary “Free Solo” (2018) directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The film’s box office revenue was 21 million U.S. dollars. Free Solo has won multiple awards, including the British Academy of Film Awards and the Oscar for Best Documentary Film.
In June 2018, Honnold and Tommy Caldwell teamed up to challenge the nose on El Capitan in Yosemite. They managed to complete the 3,000-foot route in 2 hours (1:58:07). Caldwell also appeared in the movie “Free Solo”. In 2018, Honnold made cameo appearances on CBS This Morning, The Joe Logan Experience, and The Today Show.
