Albert Ueltschi is widely regarded as the father of modern aviation training, the personal pilot of renowned airline entrepreneur Juan Trippe, and a partner in Charles Lindbergh.
Albert Lee Ueltschi (May 15, 1917 – October 18, 2012) was born and raised in Franklin County, Kentucky, where he initially developed a passion for flying. At 16, he opened a hamburger shop called Kitty Hawk to raise money for flying lessons. He soon started flying solo and dropped out of the University of Kentucky to teach flying lessons across the country, eventually becoming a Pan Am pilot. In 1951, he founded his aviation training company, FlightSafety International. He took the company public in 1968 and sold it to billionaire Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2006 for $1.5 billion in stock. In addition to airplanes and flying, Ueltschi is honorary chairman of Orbis International, one of the world’s largest charitable foundations for blindness. Additionally, he and his son Jim founded HelpMeSee in 2010 to try to address cataract blindness in developing countries.
