Long before becoming a billionaire, Allan Slaight started his career in 1948 with CHAB, a vintage radio station in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Slater saw the industry take off in 1965 when he became the general manager of CHUM, a Toronto radio station.
Six years later, he jumped into ownership, setting up his own broadcaster called Slaight Broadcasting, which was later renamed Slaight Communications. At the time, he purchased several radio stations in Toronto and Montreal, before merging with IWC Communications, eventually acquiring Standard Broadcasting in 1985. It was in 2007 that he sold 53 radio stations and two TV stations to Astral Media in exchange for 880 million CAD shares and 4.75 million Astral shares. In early 2012, Slaight and his wife Emmanuelle Gattuso donated $50 million to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, increasing their total commitment to the organization to $72 million.
