In the late 1960s, he entered the film industry as an independent producer in the UK. After making nine films, he returned to the United States in 1973 to become head of creative affairs at 20th Century Fox. Just three years later, Ladd assumed the role of company president. Under Ladd, Fox created several classics, including Star Wars (1977) and Alien (1979). However, Ladd left Fox’s presidency in 1979 to form his own production company, Ladd Company. He went on to have more success in comedies like The Night Shift (1982), Police Academy (1984), and the Oscar-winning Right Wing (1983) and Chariots of Fire (1983). One of the company’s most famous works is also the classic Blade Runner (1982). Ladd joined MGM/UA in 1985 and eventually held the position of Chairman and CEO of Pathé Entertainment. During his tenure, MGM/UA enjoyed the benefit of producing hits such as Moonstruck (1987), A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and Thelma & Louise (1991). In 1993, Ladd reformed his eponymous company with Paramount Pictures, where he produced the 1995 hit Brady Bunch Movie and Best Picture winner Braveheart.
