Alfranken is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. He currently serves as the U.S. Senator from Minnesota. Before entering politics, he was an actor, comedian, writer and radio host. His works include Saturday Night Live and the Al Franken Show. Alan Stuart Franken was born on May 21, 1951 in New York City. His father Joseph (died 1993) was a printing salesman, and his mother Phoebe (died 2003) was a real estate agent. He has an older brother, photographer Owen. Franken grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and attended Black School. He graduated in 1969. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Harvard University (1973).

Franken goes to high school with future comedian Tom Davis. The two performed local performances in multiple venues in Minneapolis. They were recruited as comedy writers on NBC Saturday Night Live. Franken wrote and performed for SNL from 1975 to 1980. He returned to the show from 1985 to 1995. During his tenure, he received multiple awards, including Emmy Awards, in recognition of his outstanding writing in a comedy series. Franken published his first book in 1993. He defeated the Republican candidate Noam Coleman by a narrow margin. After Coleman appealed twice, Franken was sworn in on July 7, 2009. He easily defeated Mike McFadden for a second term in 2014. Franken is a member of the Democratic Peasant Labor Party of Minnesota. He is a member of various legislative committees, including the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
