Ajit Pai is an American lawyer, corporate executive and member of the Republican Party. He is known for his opposition to US net neutrality. His current title is Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Prior to this, he worked in the Department of Justice and Verizon Communications. Ajit Varadaraj Pai was born on January 10, 1973 in Buffalo, New York. His parents were Varadaraj and Radha, a urologist and anesthesiologist. He grew up in Parsons, Kansas and attended Parsons High School. Pai received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Harvard University (1994) and a juris doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School (1997). He served as the editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.

Pai started his legal career in the office of Judge Martin Leach-Cross Feldman for the Eastern District of Louisiana. His next job was in the antitrust department of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC. He worked as a lawyer in the telecommunications sector from 1998 to 2001. Pai joined Verizon Communications Inc. in 2001 as Deputy General Counsel. He held this position until the beginning of 2003. He has since worked in the Department of Justice (Office of Legal Policy) and the Senate Judiciary Committee (advisers to Jeff Sessions and Sam Brownback).

Pai has held various positions in the FCC’s General Counsel Office since 2007. Most notably, he served as the head of lawyers in the Administrative Law Department. He was selected as the Marshall Memorial Fellow in 2011. From 2011 to 2012, Pai worked at the law firm “Jenner & Block”. In 2012, he was nominated by President Barack Obama as a member of the Federal Communications Commission. He was recommended by the researcher for the position of Republican Mitch McConnell. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, Pai was promoted to Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. He was sworn in on January 23, 2017. He became the first Indian-American to hold this position. Pai opposes net neutrality in the United States. He voted in December 2017 to overthrow the Internet regulation stipulated in Chapter 2 of the Communications Act of 1934.
