AJ McLean is an American recording artist, dancer and actor from West Palm Beach, Florida. He is a founding member of the vocal boy band “Backstreet Boys”. Backstreet Boys has released 9 studio albums, including Millennium (1999) and Black & Blue (2000). In total, they received 8 Grammy nominations. McLean’s solo album Have It All was released in 2010. McLean was born Alexander James McLean on January 9, 1978 in West Palm Beach, Florida. His parents Dennis and Robert divorced when he was a toddler. He has no brothers or sisters. McLean was raised by his mother and his grandparents Adolf and Ursula. As a child, he participated in various dance classes. He also showed a keen interest in acting and singing. McLean attended Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Florida. In his senior year, he followed his instructor to complete his required courses while on the road with the Backstreet Boys.

McLean started modeling when he was 5 years old under the guidance of his mother. At the age of 6, he played the role of a “fool” in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” produced by the school. The Backstreet Boys was founded in Orlando, Florida in 1993. In addition to McLean, members include Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. The band’s first album of the same name was released by Jive Records in 1996. Their second album Backstreet’s Back came out in 1997. Backstreet Boys’ third album, Millennium (1999), sold more than 24 million copies worldwide. It is certified as 13 times platinum by RIAA. Their fourth album, Black & Blue (2000), ranked first on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Their 9th album DNA was released in January 2019.
Outside of Backstreet Boys, McLean has released several personal projects. He sometimes uses the nickname “Johnny No Name”. McLean’s first solo album “Have It All” was released in January 2010. It was supported by the single “Teenage Wildlife”. This album is ranked 31st on the Japanese Albums Chart and 16th in Taiwan. In 2015, McLean released non-album singles “Living Together” and “You”. His recent singles include “Back Porch Bottle Service”, “Boy and a Man”, “Give You Away” and “Love on the Brain”. McLean is currently working on his second album “Long Road”.
In 2016, McLean was selected as “Johnny Vermillion” in the post-apocalyptic zombie horror film “Dead 7”. The film is directed by Danny Luo and produced by the lunatic asylum. It is starring Nick Carter, a member of Backstreet Boys. McLean voiced the character “Kuchimba” in the 2018 Lion Guard. He plans to return to the TV show in the fall of 2020 as a contestant on ABC Dancing with the Stars.
