Ahmet Ertegun was born in Istanbul, Turkey in July 1923 and died in December 2006. He is best known for being the co-founder and president of Atlantic Records.
In 1967, Ertegun and his co-founder Jerry Wexler sold Atlantic Records to Warner Bros. Seven Arts for $17 million. This equates to $130 million after adjusting for inflation. He invested part of his windfall in what eventually became a valuable collection of modern art. After his death, his collection was housed in a museum in Naples, Florida. Ertegun is known for discovering a number of rock, rhythm and blues musicians and for creating many pop and blues songs. He has served as president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 2017. Ahmet Ertegun was responsible for helping to foster relations between the United States and Turkey and was president of the American Turkish Association for 20 years. He is the co-founder of the North American Soccer League team, the New York Cosmos. In 2000, he was named a Living Legend by the U.S. Library of Congress. Ahmet Ertegun died in December 2006 at the age of 83.
