Agnes Nixon is an American television writer, producer and actress. She created the popular soap operas One Life to Live and All My Children. Nixon was born Agnes Eckhart on December 10, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents are Agnes Patricia and Harry Joseph Eckhart. Nixon attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the late 1940s.

Nixon began her writing career under the tutelage of Irna Phillips. During the 1950s and 1960s, she contributed to many soap operas. Her early works include Finding Tomorrow, Guiding Light and As the World Turns. In 2002, she received the Special Health Sentinel Award for her contribution to “Guiding Lights”. Nixon created the character “Rachel Corey Hutchins” for the NBC series “The Other World.” The show ran for 35 seasons from 1964 to 1999.
Nixon created the soap “One Life to Live” in the mid-1960s. It ran for 45 seasons on ABC from July 1968 to January 2012. The show revolves around a rich and poor family living in the fictional town of Lanview, Pennsylvania. It won the GLAAD Media Award in 1994 for telling a storyline about homosexuality and intolerance. Nixon premiered her second soap opera, My Children, in 1970. The first ran on ABC for 41 years from 1970 to 2011. It stars actress Susan Luckey as “Erica Caine”. Nixon won 5 Daytime Emmys for Best Writing for all my kids. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1994. Nixon co-created the Love series (1983-95) with Douglas Maran. It was renamed “City (1995-97)” for two seasons.

Agnes Nixon passed away on September 28, 2016 at the age of 93. Her reported cause of death was pneumonia caused by Parkinson’s disease. From 1951 until her death in 1996, she was married to car dealer “Robert Henry Nixon”. They have four children, Cathy, Emily, Mary and Robert. She also has 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
