Afeni Shakur is an American civil rights activist and businesswoman. She is the mother of the late West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur. Afeni was born Alice Faye Williams on January 10, 1947, in Lumberton, North Carolina. His father, Walter, was a truck driver, and her mother, Rosabel, was a housewife. She has an older sister named Gloria Jean. In 1958, Shakur and her family moved to New York City. There, she attended Bronx Science High School.
Profession
Shakur was a member of the Black Panther Party from 1964 to 1969. She wrote several articles for the party’s newsletter and was able to trick FBI agents into believing the Black Panther Party was in decline. In 1969, she was arrested and indicted on multiple counts of conspiracy to bomb police stations and other public places. Shakur served as his own criminal defense attorney in the 1971 Black Panther 21 trial. She was freed in May 1971.
Shakur moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1984. She got caught up in a life of drug addiction and couldn’t keep her job. She moved to Marin County, California in 1988, but will return to New York City in 1991. With the help of Narcotics Anonymous sessions, she was also able to overcome her addiction. Shakur became the caretaker of the Tupac estate after he was shot in 1996. This includes Tupac’s legacy, as well as his vast library of unreleased music. Shakur founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997. The foundation provides arts-related programs for young people. She is also known for her Makaveli Branded clothing line, which was established in 2003.

Afeni Shakur passed away on May 2, 2016 at the age of 69. Her official cause of death was a heart attack. She was rushed to a local hospital after police responded to reports of possible cardiac arrest. She died soon after. Shakur was married to “Lumumba” from 1968 to 1971, followed by his brother “Mutulu” from 1975 to 1982. She married Dr. Gust Davis in 2004. Afeni Shakur has a net worth of $50 million. Her daughter Sekyiwa survived.
