Adam Rippon is an American figure skater and Olympic bronze medalist. He made history and became the first openly gay American man to qualify for the Winter Olympics. His achievements include the 2010 Four Continent Championships and the 2016 U.S. National Championships. Ripon was born on November 11, 1989 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He has 5 younger siblings. His mother Kelly was a dancer/skating athlete. Rippon had serious hearing problems at birth. Before his first birthday, he underwent ear correction surgery at Yale University.

Rippon started skating at the age of 10. He was first inspired by his mother and started skating. His favorite skater is Kwan Yingshan. Rippon is a member of the New York Skating Club. Since 2000, he has been training for 7 years under the guidance of coach Yelena Sergeeva. His first important game was the 2005 American Championship, where he won the silver medal. Next, he participated in the 2005-06 ISU Junior Grand Prix and won the 6th place. Ripon trained with Russian figure skating coach Nikolai Morozov from 2007 to 2008. He competed in the 2007 Junior Grand Prix and won a gold medal. Subsequently, he won consecutive gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He also finished third in the 2008 Russian Cup. Rippon started working with Canadian coach Brian Orser in December 2008. His senior national debut was at the 2009 US Championship. He defeated Machida Tashi (Japan) and Kevin Reynolds (Canada) at the 2010 Four Continents Championship and won the gold medal.
Rippon moved to California in 2012 and trained under the guidance of Rafael Arutyunyan. He won silver medals in national competitions in 2012 and 2015. His next major victory was at the 2016 U.S. National Championship. He had to withdraw from the 2017 U.S. Championship due to a fractured left ankle. Ripon made his debut at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He is the oldest figure skater since George Hill (1936) to represent the United States in the Olympic Games. He is also the first openly gay American skater to qualify for the Winter Olympics. As a member of the US team, Ripon won the Olympic bronze medal in the figure skating team competition. He is ranked 10th in men’s singles.
