Born in July 1951, he is best known for his work in indie or independent films such as The Driller Killer, The 45 Year Old Lady, The King of New York, The Bad Lieutenant and The Funeral – films from the 70’s to the late 90’s.
Ferrara was born in the Bronx, New York City, of Italian and Irish descent. He grew up in a Catholic family and moved at 15, moving to Westchester to attend SUNY Purchase’s film school. That’s when he started directing short films. However, when the job became short-lived, he created a pornographic film he could direct, starring his then-girlfriend. Ferrara soon found success and began creating mainstream films. Since then, he has established multiple working relationships and often collaborates with actors and producers alike on multiple films. Most notable is Christopher Walken, who has appeared in several of Ferrara’s films. His latest film, 4:44 – Last Day on Earth, was released in 2011, but he has two more planned for 2014, Welcome to New York and Pasolini. Ferrara has two adopted daughters.
