Abby Wambach is a former American football player and coach. She is an Olympic gold medalist and FIFA World Cup winner. Mary Abigail Wanbach was born on June 2, 1980 in Rochester, New York. Her parents are Pete and Judy, and she has six siblings, Matthew, Patrick, Peter, Andrew, Laura and Beth. She is 5-foot-11 and plays the forward position.
Wambach grew up in suburban Pittsford and attended Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton. She is very competitive in various sports including basketball and football. Wambach continued his education at the University of Florida on a full athletic scholarship. From 1998 to 2001, she played for the Florida Gators women’s soccer team. In 1998, she led the Gators to their first NCAA championship as a freshman. Wambach has won numerous honors and accolades during his time with the Gators. She became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 96 goals and was inducted into the University of Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Wambach was selected by the Washington Liberty with the second overall pick in the 2002 WUSA draft. From 2002 to 2003, she played in 37 games and scored 23 goals. She was also named Rookie of the Year in 2002. A few days before the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, WUSA was disbanded and Wambach had no club. She rejoined the Washington Liberty in 2009, following the formation of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. From 2009 to 2010, she scored 21 goals and was named player-coach after the club was renamed MagicJack in 2011. She later played for the Western New York Chargers from 2013 to 2014.
Wambach made his international debut with the US national team in 2001. The team finished third at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, followed by a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. In total, Wambach has participated in four Women’s World Cups and two Olympic Games. She was named FIFA Player of the Year in 2012 and won the FIFA World Cup in 2015.
