Aaron Josef Hernandez was born on November 6, 1989 in Bristol, Connecticut. He is of Puerto Rican and Italian descent. His parents are Terri and Dennis. He has a brother named Jonathan, aka DJ Hernandez, who attended Bristol Central High School where he played both football and basketball. He played three seasons at the University of Florida before declaring for the 2010 NFL draft.

Hernandez started out as a member of the Bristol Central High School varsity team. He has played various positions for the Rams, including wide receiver, defensive end and tight end. He was named Gatorade Football Player of the Year during his senior year. That year, he recorded 67 catches for 1,807 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also finished with 72 tackles and 12 sacks on the defensive end. From 2007 to 2010, Hernandez played three seasons with the Florida Gators. They won the 2008 SEC Championship and the 2009 BCS National Championship. His college honors include the SEC First Team, the All-American First Team and the 2009 John McKee Award.
Hernandez was selected by the New England Patriots with the 113th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. In June 2010, he signed a four-year contract with the Patriots. Hernandez started the NFL season as the youngest of all active players. He played 14 games in his rookie season and had 45 catches for 563 yards and six touchdowns. He helped the team reach Super Bowl XLVI, where they lost to the New York Giants.He was eliminated by the Patriots in June 2013

Before his death, Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of semi-professional footballer Odin Lloyd. Lloyd was shot and killed on June 17, 2013.
