Sridevi is an award-winning Bollywood actress and film producer. She mainly works in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films. She is recognized as the first female superstar in India. Her film works include 16 Vayathinile (1977), Premabhishekam (1981), Himmatwala (1983) and English Vinglish (2012). Sridevi, formerly known as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, was born on August 13, 1963 in Sivakasi, India. Her parents are Ayyapan (d. 1991) and Rajeswari (d. 1997). She has two siblings, Sri Rata and Satish.

Sridevi made his first appearance in the Tamil film Thunaivan (1969) directed by MA Thirumugam. She was chosen as the Hindu God of War “Lord Murugan”. Other early films appeared in Nam Naadu (1969), Kumara Sambhavam (1970) and Aathi Bhakta Kumbara (1974). She won the Kerala Film Award for her performance in Poompatta (1971). Sridevi made his Bollywood debut in Julie (1975), starring Lakshmi and Vikram. She later played “Selvi” in Moondru Mudichu (1976). Sridevi appeared opposite Kamal Hassan in Solva Sawan (1979). She co-starred with Jeetendra in the Bollywood comedy “Himmatwala” (1983). Sridevi has appeared in many movies with actors Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Jeetendra. Her films in the 1990s include Lamhe (1991), Gumrah (1993), Laadla (1994) and Judaai (1997). She was a member of the board of directors of the Asian Film and Television Academy (AAFT).
Sridevi returned to the big screen in 2012 after a 15-year hiatus. She played “Shashi Godbole” in the comedy “English Vinglish” (2012). The film was directed by Gauri Shinde and earned 780 million rupees (US$12 million) at the box office. Her recent projects include Bombay Talkies (2013), Puli (2015) and Mom (2017). Sridevi has won 6 film awards, including 4 best actress awards. She won the “Padma Shri” Civilian Award in 2013. Other honors include Zee Cine Award, Tamil Nadu National Film Award, Stardust Award and 2013 NDTV Indian of the Year Award.
